Chris McCandless and transcendentalism both connected to nature which is an escape from the materialism of society. Chris reaches a higher level of spirituality and truth in nature. Chris and transcendentalism are also connected to the belief in being true to oneself and following one's instincts. Chris followed his own instincts and ideas by going to Alaska without anything along.
The connection I see between McCandless and transcendentalism is the synchronization with nature. A transcendentalist believes in being one with nature and going beyond human experience in the real world. This is exactly what McCandless does by creating a nomadic life for himself.
There are a few connections I see between Chris McCandliss and transcendentalism, for one his belief of the evil that is materialism. To begin with, he transcended from his cozy wealthy life provided by his parents to become one with his intuition in the wilderness. One of the main ideas of transcendentalism states that one can reach a higher level of spirituality in truth and nature. He did so by initially rejecting societal beliefs and not conforming to society or what others had to say about him.
Chris McCandless refuses to accept gifts from his parents or give gifts. He wanted to pull himself away from the material world. Towards the end, before entering Alaska, McCandless decides he is better off without all of his gear, belongings, and money and chooses to cut himself off from the material world in its entirety before entering nature alone.
People wanted to get away from the government and life where the government would not bother them. The transcendentalism movement was people getting people more into nature. To escape the evils and materialism of society.
Chris left everything he had when he decide to disappear off the map. That relates to Transcendentalism because, transcendentalists don't like to be materialists. He also makes a connection to transcendentalism because he so in touch with nature and its beauty.He makes an extreme connection to non-conformity because hoe many people do you know that burn their money, leave everything behind and don't wear socks or shoes.

A quote in the powerpoint that showed a connection is Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote it says "Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great not what you were never made for. To be great is to be understood". Also the main elements of trancendentalism are nature, individual, and self-reliance. Overall this all has a connection in some way with Chris McCandliss.
The connections that you see between Chris and the transcendentalism movement is that you see that Chris is self reliant and doing things that most people don't seem to be doing. Traveling from state to state isn't the "norm" for people, you see that he is slowly drifting away from society. I feel as the though the connections between Chris and the transcendentalist were a strong one, and what I mean by that is transcendentalism is a belief were the person thinks of nature as inherently good not corrupt. I feel that Chris wanted to go to this odyssey to find and take in what this world has to offer without any money or any support of that matter, to just be him and the woods. I feel as Chris didn't waste his life living that American mainstream life, but actually got the taste of being free and getting to know how purity could come from something as vast as the woods.

Mcandiliss shows this movement known as transcendalism because he talks about how he gets uncomfortable being in a city for to long or how evil society can be.He also talks about how nature should remain pure and untamed saying that he doesn't all the things that most people have. He is also against most social beliefs and talks about how life out in nature is really the right way to live.
Chris McCandless wanted to pursue a lifestyle in which he lived closely to nature without the influence of other people. Transcendentalists look to finding a level of truth and the reality of the world through nature. McCandless follows this as he wanted to go in to nature and abandoned everything he owned. He renounced to the materialistic things of the world by giving away all his money and only having what he needed necessary to survive. The movement is about people finding themselves through the pureness of nature. McCandless was also a lover of Jack London, who expressed his own ideas about capitalism. London was an influence on McCandless, so he went on to find himself through these transcendentalists ideas.

ReplyDeleteI believe Chris McCandliss connects to transcendentalism because he is looking to find himself through nature. He wants to find his purpose in life so he strips down of all materialism and connects with nature. HE goes against society rules and does what he feels he should do.
ReplyDeleteBoth McCandliss and Transcendentalism have something to do with nature. Chris wants to go out and find himself. He wants to experience in the physical world and transcend.
ReplyDeleteChris McCandless escaped from everyone and just wanted to be in nature because nature was an escape from the evils and materialism of society. McCandless followed his own dream and was determined no matter what anyone thought, he was showing individualism. People tried to help Mccandless with whatever they could help him with, giving him money, food, materials, yet most of the time he would refuse materials and didn't want to accept help.
ReplyDeleteChris McCandliss relates to the transcendentalism movement by making his own decisons, and not let anyone influence him. Another thing that I saw that Chris McCandliss did that also related to the movement, was that Chris went to the wild to hang out with nature, and learn from it. Like in the slide, Chris McCandliss carried only what he needed and not things that were not necessary as in the blog said "reject material excess" .
ReplyDeleteChris McCandliss wanted to find a higher sense of truth about his life which is why he wanted to disappear. He is connected to transcendentalism because the reasoning behind it is to find truth through higher human reasoning. Chris was not a materialistic person all he wanted was to find what was good in the world without all the distractions of our everyday life.

Being able to go into his own world was his human reasoning for disappearing. He no longer wanted to be the person other people wanted him to be but instead what he wanted to be.
ReplyDeleteMcandiliss shows this movement known as transcendalism because he talks about how he gets uncomfortable being in a city for to long or how evil society can be.He also talks about how nature should remain pure and untamed saying that he doesn't all the things that most people have. He is also against most social beliefs and talks about how life out in nature is really the right way to live.
ReplyDeleteChris McCandless wanted to pursue a lifestyle in which he lived closely to nature without the influence of other people. Transcendentalists look to finding a level of truth and the reality of the world through nature. McCandless follows this as he wanted to go in to nature and abandoned everything he owned. He renounced to the materialistic things of the world by giving away all his money and only having what he needed necessary to survive. The movement is about people finding themselves through the pureness of nature. McCandless was also a lover of Jack London, who expressed his own ideas about capitalism. London was an influence on McCandless, so he went on to find himself through these transcendentalists ideas.

ReplyDeleteFrom what I've read is that transcendentalism is connecting with nature and escaping from the evil and materialism in society. Chris McCandless gave up everything and had planned to go out in nature. Maybe the reason he left to Alaska is for this reason. Even while traveling he never really accepted anything so he was probably trying not to be materialistic.
ReplyDeleteTranscendentalism is when you have a belief of a higher level of truth that can be attained through human reasoning, which is what I believe that Chris had. Chris wanted a higher connection to nature. Nature is an escape from the evils and materialism of society. Chris definitely showed that he loves nature because he got rid of his 25,000 dollars to go out and explore.
ReplyDeleteA Connection between Chris McCandless and the Transcendentalism movement can be that Chris made a decision of isolating himself from the "good life" he had. He might have desired a new change, something out of the ordinary. Therefore he had an idea of connecting more with nature by disappearing into the wild.

Secondly, consider about other aspects such as Historical Background that inspire or create revolution separate from your own society which is what Chris is planning to do. About nature, it is an escape from materialism and it relates to Chris McCandless because Chris is also trying to get away from his society as his manifestion to remain pure at last.

One of the many purposes of his adventures is having the belief in being true to oneself. He tries to be himself and exit any type of negative society so he decides to travel to find a connection through himself and nature. Transcendentalism and Chris McCandless show the importance and benefits of both nature and individualism.
ReplyDeleteAn essential concept of transcendentalism is individualism, being self-sufficient and following one’s personal beliefs. Chris McCandless is self-reliant by working in small jobs and saving money in order to provide for himself. McCandless rarely accepts help from others for example Jan Burres offers him warm clothes for his journey which he repeatedly declines to accept because he does not like to being offered help. He is trying to complete his journey alone and in not receiving help from others McCandless is doing so.
