After viewing the Prezi on transcendentalism, write a few (3-5) sentences on connections you see between Chris McCandliss and the transcendentalism movement.

  1. Chris McCandless and transcendentalism both connected to nature which is an escape from the materialism of society. Chris reaches a higher level of spirituality and truth in nature. Chris and transcendentalism are also connected to the belief in being true to oneself and following one's instincts. Chris followed his own instincts and ideas by going to Alaska without anything along.

  2. The connection I see between McCandless and transcendentalism is the synchronization with nature. A transcendentalist believes in being one with nature and going beyond human experience in the real world. This is exactly what McCandless does by creating a nomadic life for himself.

  3. There are a few connections I see between Chris McCandliss and transcendentalism, for one his belief of the evil that is materialism. His decision of leaving behind his materialistic life and only taking what he needed to live a new life as Alex. Also, his want to spend his time in nature and his want to leave behind his materialistic life, show that much of his actions are fulled by the mindset filled with transcendentalism. McCandliss is driven by the what the transcendentalism movement was based on.

  4. Chris McCandliss connects one with transcendentalism because is symbolizes how he wants to connect with nature. Transcendentalism is a higher level of truth and Chris is a perfect example since he transcend when going to different place and experiencing new things. He goes beyond in experiences to connect with the world.

  5. Chris McCandless left society to go be himself in nature. He got tired of everything going on in life that he wanted to get away. To find the person he really is in the Alaskan wilderness to be "intertwined" with nature. Transcendentalism involves finding the high level in truth that can be found on a persons reasoning, which is why Chris left.

  7. Chris believed in a higher level of truth that he could quite feel in society. He obviously had a very strong connection with nature and wanted to experience all he could. For what reason, i still don't fully understand but as he felt he was being rejected by the standard social beliefs and was part of why he did what he did. Chris wanted to remain pure and untamed like nature and traveling the world as he did was how he was going to fulfill that dream.

  8. Chris somewhat relates to the nature part of transcendentalism by just a little. He seems to have connected to nature more but still seems to be in contact with society through working with them but eventually he does stop. But he seems to like nature and work with it

  9. Chris McCandless was a transcendentalist at large because he lived by the founding principles of transcendentalism . To begin with, he transcended from his cozy wealthy life provided by his parents to become one with his intuition in the wilderness. One of the main ideas of transcendentalism states that one can reach a higher level of spirituality in truth and nature. He did so by initially rejecting societal beliefs and not conforming to society or what others had to say about him.

  10. Chris McCandless refuses to accept gifts from his parents or give gifts. He wanted to pull himself away from the material world. Towards the end, before entering Alaska, McCandless decides he is better off without all of his gear, belongings, and money and chooses to cut himself off from the material world in its entirety before entering nature alone.

  12. Chris left everything he had when he decide to disappear off the map. That relates to Transcendentalism because, transcendentalists don't like to be materialists. He also makes a connection to transcendentalism because he so in touch with nature and its beauty.He makes an extreme connection to non-conformity because hoe many people do you know that burn their money, leave everything behind and don't wear socks or shoes.

  13. Chris McCandless gives up his material possessions as he sets out to "disappear" to experience the physical world. His actions reflect upon the elements of transcendentalism. McCandless expresses self-reliance throughout the novel, Into the Wild, in which is one of the factors of transcending the human life.

  14. After viewing the Prezi the connection i see between Chris McCandliss and the Transcendetalism movement is pretty clear. A quote in the powerpoint that showed a connection is Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote it says "Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great not what you were never made for. To be great is to be understood". Also the main elements of trancendentalism are nature, individual, and self-reliance. Overall this all has a connection in some way with Chris McCandliss.

  15. The connections that you see between Chris and the transcendentalism movement is that you see that Chris is self reliant and doing things that most people don't seem to be doing. Traveling from state to state isn't the "norm" for people, you see that he is slowly drifting away from society. Chris is not allowing societies views play apart in his life while hes on his on quest to find out what his "human nature" really is.

  17. Transcendentalism has a big connection with nature. In transcendentalism nature is seen as an escape from materialism and society which is exactly what Chris McCandless is doing. Chris burns all his money which shows how he isn't into material things. Chris is also very self-reliant. When offered help he never accepts it. His character traits would make him a transcendentalist.

  18. Chris McCandliss was a transcendentalist to the extreme. He refused to take part in modern society and when he did it was to his own discomfort. He held fast the transcendental ideas of self-reliance, finding truth in nature, and individualism. He traveled through nature trying to find truth in himself. He relied on no one but himself in his travels on forged his own path. He was a true transcendentalist.

  19. Chris McCandless and the transcendentalism movement have numerous kinds of similarities. McCandless has his own thoughts and ideas on how the Government tries to control his and others life, he finds this sickening as do many others apart of the transcendentalism movement, they feel trapped, confined, and the are pleading for freedom. McCandless avoids conformity, he want to be different, he wants to be free, as do the people in the transcendentalism movement. Poetry, a huge influence on McCandless' life, has been inspire by a lot of transcendentalism movement depositions.

  20. Chris believed in a higher level of truth and in human reasoning. Thoreau promoted the opinion that Man is meant to live in harmony with nature, being self-sufficient, and rejecting the excess of material wealth and societal pressure.Chris created a personal philosophy similar to Transcendentalism, professing a need to live in the wild and discover inner meanings and strengths based entirely on his own experiences and abilities.

  21. A few connections i see between Mccandliss and transcendentalism is that he wants to probably go into the wild to escape society. He has always been privileged a way would be to connect with nature. Mccandliss believes in being self reliant, that why he throws away his money and starts working.

  22. Some connections I see between Chris and the transcendentalism movement is that they both have to do with getting out of your comfort zone and getting into nature. Also in the prezi it talks about individualism and this is connected to Chris because he is very independent in his work and on his journey. Lastly, they connect through self reliance, Chris is on his own and wants to keep it that way, he refuses help from others.

I feel as the though the connections between Chris and the transcendentalist were a strong one, and what I mean by that is transcendentalism is a belief were the person thinks of nature as inherently good not corrupt. I feel that Chris wanted to go to this odyssey to find and take in what this world has to offer without any money or any support of that matter, to just be him and the woods. I feel as Chris didn't waste his life living that American mainstream life, but actually got the taste of being free and getting to know how purity could come from something as vast as the woods.

Chris did this the very moment he left college and went to live off of nature. He also doesn't follow normal social beliefs such as wearing socks which he despises it. These are just two of the ones I could indefinitely identify.

Some of the connections I see between the transcendentalism movement and Chris McCandlis is that they both see nature as a way to escape from society.Some others characteristics that these two share is individualism and self-reliance, Chris decided to be away from his family for two years and followed his instincts to head into the wild.

  31. I learned about Transcendentalism last year in my English class. So far in the book, I know that the way Chris is acting, is following the beliefs of most transcendentalist. He believes that we should be one with nature and as he is isolating himself hes preparing to be, lost in the wild.

  32. Chris McCandless becomes one with nature and uses it to discover a higher level truth. I think he goes beyond the normal experience that everyday humans go through. He objects societal standards and stays true to himself. I believe he follows his own instincts and what he thinks is right.

    After viewing the Prezi on transcendentalism, I have found that Chris McCandless has many connections with the transcendentalism movement. Chris McCandless goes on his own journey to discovery the beauty of nature. He followed what he believed in, which was giving away all his belongings and burning his money, in order to find himself as a person. By living in nature, McCandless forgets about all of his worries and putting his easing his mind.

  35. As I was reading the presentation in Prezi on transcendentalism, I realized that there is a connection between Chris McCandles ant the transcendentalism movement. Chris acts on to his own belief and doesn't care what society thinks about him, which is mainly transcendentalism. No matter which point of view we look at it Chris hates what society does and ignores them for his own beliefs and acts based on those beliefs.

In the novel Chris practices transcendentalism on his journey to and in Alaska. It demonstrated how he was away from human physical activity.

Another thing that I saw that Chris McCandliss did that also related to the movement, was that Chris went to the wild to hang out with nature, and learn from it. Like in the slide, Chris McCandliss carried only what he needed and not things that were not necessary as in the blog said "reject material excess" .

  45. Chris McCandless wanted to pursue a lifestyle in which he lived closely to nature without the influence of other people. Transcendentalists look to finding a level of truth and the reality of the world through nature. McCandless follows this as he wanted to go in to nature and abandoned everything he owned. He renounced to the materialistic things of the world by giving away all his money and only having what he needed necessary to survive. The movement is about people finding themselves through the pureness of nature. McCandless was also a lover of Jack London, who expressed his own ideas about capitalism. London was an influence on McCandless, so he went on to find himself through these transcendentalists ideas.

  49. From what I've read is that transcendentalism is connecting with nature and escaping from the evil and materialism in society. Chris McCandless gave up everything and had planned to go out in nature. Maybe the reason he left to Alaska is for this reason. Even while traveling he never really accepted anything so he was probably trying not to be materialistic.

  54. An essential concept of transcendentalism is individualism, being self-sufficient and following one’s personal beliefs. Chris McCandless is self-reliant by working in small jobs and saving money in order to provide for himself. McCandless rarely accepts help from others for example Jan Burres offers him warm clothes for his journey which he repeatedly declines to accept because he does not like to being offered help. He is trying to complete his journey alone and in not receiving help from others McCandless is doing so.
